Imperial’s LED estate-wide upgrade delivers major energy and carbon savings

Imperial has completed 18 LED lighting upgrade projects during the second year of its 17-year Net Zero Programme, bringing energy efficiency improvements to campuses and academic buildings across its estate. The work is expected to save approximately 1.5 million kWh of electricity annually and contribute about 1,600 tonnes of lifetime carbon savings.

Key takeaways

  • Eighteen LED projects were delivered between August 2025 and July 2026.

  • The upgrades are projected to reduce annual energy use by approximately 1.5 million kWh.

  • Energy demand per fitting generally fell beyond the programme’s 41% target.

  • Projects covered major South Kensington buildings and 14 smaller buildings at Silwood Park.

The programme shows how a carefully planned lighting retrofit can deliver measurable operating savings while supporting broader estate decarbonisation. For contractors and property managers, it also demonstrates the value of treating lighting as a strategic building-system upgrade rather than a routine maintenance replacement.

Lighting plays a central role in decarbonisation

Imperial’s LED projects are expected to account for 43% of the total calculated annual energy reduction and 19% of lifetime carbon emissions savings forecast for the programme’s second year. Lower electrical demand can help buildings accommodate the electrification of heating and reduce dependence on fossil-fuel systems.

The projects also support compliance and efficiency objectives by reducing operational costs. For large estates, selecting spec-ready LED products, confirming compatibility with existing infrastructure and planning installation in phases can help maintain continuity while improving performance.

Building-specific planning improves results

Major upgrades were delivered at the Flowers, City and Guilds, and Electrical Engineering buildings on the South Kensington campus, in partnership with Zumtobel, Signify and Whitecroft. Imperial commissioned Arup’s specialist lighting team to develop specifications that combined estate-wide standards with the requirements of individual buildings.

At Silwood Park, 14 smaller buildings were progressively upgraded through collaboration between Imperial’s maintenance teams and Electro. This combination of specialist design and in-house delivery illustrates how lighting programmes can be scaled across buildings with different layouts, occupancy patterns and installation constraints.

For suppliers such as Led Lumenaires, the approach reinforces the importance of supporting project teams with accurate layouts, product selection assistance, bulk availability and fast fulfilment. Reliable warranty coverage and help identifying potential utility rebates can also strengthen the business case for multi-building retrofits.

Better light supports occupants and building performance

The benefits extend beyond electricity and carbon savings. Improved lighting quality can enhance teaching, research and study environments, while upgraded controls can create more consistent indoor conditions. Reduced heat gain may also improve comfort in occupied spaces.

These factors matter to universities, offices, hotels and multi-family properties alike. A well-designed retrofit should consider illumination quality, controls, maintenance access and occupant experience alongside the headline energy reduction.

LED retrofits can become business as usual

Imperial’s delivery programme demonstrates how decarbonisation can move from a long-term strategy into a repeatable estate-management process. Establishing performance criteria, assessing embodied carbon and reporting results consistently can help organisations prioritise future projects and verify savings.

For property professionals planning similar work, a practical programme should combine site surveys, lighting layouts, phased procurement and installation planning. High-performance commercial LED systems, supported by professional guidance and volume pricing, can provide a straightforward route to lower operating costs and more efficient buildings.
