Sonepar will provide free LED lighting upgrades to 14 Veterans of Foreign Wars posts nationwide through its Bright Lights Brighter Futures program. The initiative marks the United States’ 250th anniversary and is intended to reduce operating costs, improve safety and create more welcoming gathering spaces for veterans and their communities.

Key takeaways

  • Fourteen VFW posts have been selected for no-cost LED lighting retrofits.

  • Upgrades are scheduled for completion by October 2026 through local Sonepar businesses.

  • The projects are expected to lower energy use, utility expenses and maintenance needs.

  • Manufacturers, contractors and recycling partners are contributing products and services.

The program extends Sonepar’s community-focused lighting work to veteran facilities in locations across the country. Each participating post will receive an assessment and retrofit using energy-efficient LED fixtures and related materials suited to its facility.

Why the upgrades matter

VFW posts often serve as meeting halls, event venues and community centers, making lighting performance important for both daily operations and public gatherings. Replacing older lamps and fixtures with LED systems can reduce electricity consumption while improving visibility in entrances, halls, meeting rooms and other high-use areas.

Lower utility and maintenance costs may also allow participating posts to direct more of their budgets toward veteran services and local programs. For contractors and property managers evaluating similar projects, the initiative highlights the practical value of pairing fixture upgrades with an analysis of operating costs, light levels and long-term maintenance requirements.

Industry partners support the work

Sonepar said national electrical contractor IES will partner with local teams from Sonepar’s operating companies to complete the installations. Acuity Brands and Cooper Lighting are donating fixtures and materials, while TerraCycle Regulated Waste will provide compliant lamp-recycling services for removed equipment.

The partnership reflects a project model familiar to commercial lighting professionals: distributors coordinate product availability and local execution, manufacturers contribute specification-ready equipment, and specialized waste services help manage the retrofit responsibly. Suppliers such as Led Lumenaires similarly support commercial and institutional projects with bulk availability, fast fulfillment and assistance with product selection, layouts and potential utility rebates.

Selected posts and broader program

The 14 VFW locations were nominated for work to be completed through their respective local Sonepar brands. The company described the effort as part of a broader commitment to helping nonprofit and community facilities improve efficiency without taking on the full upfront cost of a retrofit.

Sonepar launched Bright Lights Brighter Futures in 2021. A previous project at a VFW post reportedly reduced annual energy consumption by more than 12,000 kilowatt-hours and avoided approximately 65 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. By the end of 2025, the program was expected to have completed 65 lighting retrofits and delivered more than $300,000 in donated installation services and lighting products to nonprofit organizations nationwide.

A focus on durable community spaces

Bill Mortimer, Sonepar USA’s director of strategic vendor engagement and program lead, said the upgrades are intended to help veterans gather in safer, more comfortable facilities. VFW National Commander Carol Whitmore also thanked the company, describing posts as important places for veterans, families and communities to connect.

For facility operators, the effort demonstrates how LED retrofits can combine measurable efficiency improvements with better occupant experience. Properly selected commercial-grade products, installation support and dependable warranty coverage remain central considerations when upgrading high-traffic buildings.
