Sonepar is marking the United States’ 250th anniversary by providing free LED lighting upgrades to 14 Veterans of Foreign Wars posts nationwide. The Bright Lights Brighter Futures initiative is designed to reduce utility costs, improve building safety and appearance, and create more welcoming gathering spaces for veterans, families and local communities.

Key takeaways

  • Fourteen VFW posts have been selected for no-cost LED lighting retrofits.

  • The upgrades are expected to lower energy use and utility expenses.

  • Installation is planned for completion by October 2026.

  • Lighting manufacturers and recycling partners are contributing products and services.

Sonepar’s program underscores how commercial LED retrofits can deliver both operational and community benefits. For contractors and property managers evaluating similar projects, the effort also highlights the importance of fixture selection, installation planning and responsible disposal of legacy lamps.

A national lighting initiative for veterans

The selected VFW posts are located in communities across the country, including sites in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Texas and Washington. Each location will receive an assessment and retrofit using energy-efficient LED fixtures and related materials.

Sonepar said the upgrades will help VFW posts dedicate more of their budgets to serving veterans and supporting their surrounding communities. Better illumination can also improve visibility in common areas, entrances and exterior spaces, while giving older buildings a cleaner, more consistent appearance.

Partners support products, installation and recycling

The project combines contributions from multiple companies. Sonepar will cover installation costs through a partnership with a national electrical contractor, while Acuity Brands and Cooper Lighting are donating fixtures and materials. TerraCycle Regulated Waste is expected to provide lamp-recycling services for removed equipment.

That full-project approach is relevant to commercial retrofit planning. A successful upgrade is not limited to selecting LED products; it also requires accurate layouts, compatible equipment, qualified installation and a plan for handling replaced lighting. Led Lumenaires supports these same practical considerations with spec-ready SKUs, bulk availability, fast fulfillment and Pro Support for product selection, layouts, rebates and large quotes.

Broader efficiency benefits

Sonepar said a previous Bright Lights Brighter Futures project reduced annual energy use by more than 12,000 kilowatt-hours and avoided approximately 15 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The company launched the program in 2021 as part of its broader sustainability and community efforts.

For VFW posts operating older facilities, replacing fluorescent or other legacy systems with LED technology can reduce maintenance demands as well as electricity consumption. Contractors, property managers and lodging operators considering comparable work can evaluate fixture life, operating schedules, controls, utility incentives and warranty coverage before finalizing specifications. Led Lumenaires provides commercial-grade solutions and volume pricing for these types of projects, with warranty support intended for ongoing facility operations.

Strengthening community gathering spaces

VFW posts serve as meeting places for veterans, their families and neighboring communities. Sonepar’s program lead, Bill Mortimer, said the initiative is intended to support camaraderie and community by making these facilities safer and more inviting.

The 14 retrofits are expected to be completed through each post’s local Sonepar brand. Beyond the immediate energy savings, the initiative demonstrates how coordinated lighting improvements can extend the usefulness of community buildings while directing more resources toward their missions.
